Research & Teaching

After examining a variety of topics (from Origins & Migrations, Life & Customs, and Memory & Identity), participants will construct either a research paper or lesson plan.  This unit – Unit 4. Research & Teaching – is designed for students to apply the knowledge gained from this course, Dakota Germans from Russia.  Thus, from Monday, July 19, 2010 through Friday, August 6, 2010 participants will work independently on a term project, either a family history or lesson plan.  These research papers and lesson plans must be rooted in the required and suggested texts from Units 1-3, as well as new material housed at the GRHC archives or on the GRHC website (www.ndsu.edu/grhc).  These papers/plans are due by midnight on Friday, August 6th.  (Late work will not be accepted on the final unit, so budget your time accordingly).

Option #01 - Research Paper

Participants who opt to write a research paper will write a family history using primary and secondary sources.  Participants may write a personal family history or write a history of a DMOHP narrator (see www.ndsu.edu/grhc/dakotamemories for more information).  This paper should be 5-7 pages (1250-1750 words).  Participants should incorporate material from Units 1-3, as well as material from the GRHC archives and/or website.  Participants must properly cite their material using footnotes or parenthetical references.

If you need assistance using the GRHC archives or website, please contact either Michael M. Miller (GRHC director) at 701.231.8416 or Michael.Miller@ndsu.edu or Acacia (Jonas) Stuckle (GRHC special collections associate) at 701.231.6596.

A discussion board will also exist for participants to pose questions/comments regarding this assignment.  This discussion board will be a sounding board. For instance, if participants stumble across something interesting that does not fit in the paper, share it via this board.  If participants have a research idea, but need help teasing out the logistics, post the idea on this board.  Using this board will allow others (including the instructor) to help you with the research and writing process.

Option #02 - Lesson Plan

Participants who opt to create a lesson plan will use primary and secondary sources.  This lesson plan must be appropriate for a 50-minute lesson in a K-12 classroom.  It must include the standard components (Lesson Title, Target Audience, Grade Level, Skills Needed, Materials and Handouts, Lesson Objectives, Topic Overview, Lesson Description and Procedures, and Follow-up Exercises).  Participants must include or draw on the material from Units 1-3, as well as material from the GRHC archives or website.  (Be sure to identify, with proper bibliographic citations, the sources consulted in compiling this lesson plan.)
